An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which registered on the site recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet the odds had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," stated a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other platform users also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
