Elite Athletes Appeal on Iranian Authorities to Stop Death Sentence of Boxing Champion

In excess of 20 Olympic medal winners, mentors and additional world-class competitors have signed a letter demanding a stop to the capital punishment of a boxing champion and instructor, who is facing execution in the country.

History of Putting to Death Sports Figures

The letter noted that the athlete's circumstances was part of a pattern and emphasized the nation's record of putting to death competitors for their beliefs, such as a football captain, skipper of the soccer squad, and a volleyball captain, leader of the national women’s volleyball team. In 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year Iranian wrestling champion, was also executed.

Further signatories to the statement consist of Tracy Edwards, who led the first women's squad in a global yacht race and was the pioneering lady to be awarded a prestigious nautical honor; the former leader of the soccer side a sports advocate; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the national team for the 1978 World Cup.

Detention and Unjust Proceedings

The boxer was arrested in early 2020. The allegations against him entailed “spreading corruption on Earth through incendiarism and ruin of public property”. His sentence has been reversed twice but on the fourth of October it was upheld on the latest review. His trial was criticized as “highly unjust” by advocates and bodies.

Call to International Body

The appeal to prevent Vafaei Sani’s execution comes after a 2023 letter to the UN high commissioner for human rights, signed by more than a hundred advocates and organizations, urging intervention to avert the sports figure's capital punishment.

Death Penalty Surge

As per reports, there is an “capital punishment escalation in the country, which has attained alarming levels”. In the year 2023, the government sentenced at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a 48% increase on 2022. Last year, records showed 972 capital punishments, constituting the maximum count since two thousand fifteen. More than 800 people have been sentenced so far in the current year.
