The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of several weeks, the American president started showing everyone his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to build it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and rising, and this week a study projected his fossil fuel policies would kill 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have risked – truly, no former commander would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with federal agencies.

As disorienting as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the established notion about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of love into a figure of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, however it is still disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my upbringing, because theoretically Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and given that the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense regarding him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. The obvious and clear truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a form of profound affection focused on the impoverished is what has always made the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Finest of Us
Hence I have become heartened to observe the persistent defiance to Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired electorate to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the highest qualities in US history.

America is best defended, in other words, by relationship to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to what makes it distinctive and beautiful, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it imply acting as if the most damaging of both America and Christian faith did not happen; it means both modesty and belief, a blend that genuine national faithful should embrace.
