Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a leading film company and bringing audiences to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a glimpse into the plot but keeping viewers wondering how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — receiving a latest plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it probably is.
One thing the teaser avoids is what Woody is back with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping giveaway items find good homes.
Certainly, Pixar will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with him. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?
At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The last thing Woody did before setting off for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the badge pinned to her shirt.
It is hoped she is still the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
